Students explore food and grocery stores. In this lesson on foods, students are introduced to the food pyramid and healthy eating through a variety of center activities. Students have to opportunity to role-play working at a grocery store.

Eighth graders use the unit price to compare which local grocery store has the best prices. Assign students to work with a partner and a role. One person is the recorder and the other is the mathematician.

Students determine how much they would need to feed a family for a month. They plan meals and use Internet grocery stores to find the cost of individual food items. They brainstorm in small groups to come up with 1 weeks worth of menus.
