Wisconsin Historical Society: Elizabeth and Henry Baird

Curated by ACT

Elizabeth and Henry Baird played a major role in the settling of Wisoncisn to white settlers in the nineteenth century. Elizabeth had been Henry's pupil and married him at the age of fourteen. With her knowledge of the fur trade and her native ancestry, she played a pivotal part in helping Henry, by then a lawyer, negotiate land transactions with the native people. As a result of their work, many new farms were established and the population of Wisconsin grew and thrived. Both wrote memoirs of their experiences, which can be accessed through links at the bottom of this page.
