This instructional activity involves students observing the life cycle of a mealworm (beetle) from egg, larva, pupa and adult stages. Student groups receive a plastic container with fresh oatmeal and two to three mealworms. They fill out a chart entitled, "What do Different Animals Eat?" Students listen as the teacher reads "The Forgetful Pony" and then brainstorm the kinds of food each animal really eats. They observe containers of oatmeal from the Pony's barn, and receive containers with mealworms in them.
