Buying enough candy for trick-or-treaters without spending a lot of money can be the ultimate Halloween trick. Middle schoolers solve two holiday-themed word problems to determine which brand of candy is the better deal, based on cost and the amount of pieces in each package. They then design their own mix of candy using the prices from the first problem.

Instructional Ideas

  • Bring in samples of each kind of candy for a hands-on (and delicious) activity
  • Incorporate into a nutrition lesson in which learners also calculate the unhealthiest candy based on calories, saturated fat, or grams of sugar
  • Project onto the board as a warm-up activity or addition to a math assessment during Halloween
  • Include in a holiday homework packet

Classroom Considerations

  • Presentation contains images of the candies and their prices, but doesn't go more in depth than that
  • Images may be difficult to see if printed in black and white

Pros

  • A fun way to practice multiplication and division skills
  • Short length makes it easy to add the worksheet to an existing lesson or assignment

Cons

  • None
