Virtual Museum of Canada: Community Stories: A Life of Service: Nurse Bennett Heritage House

Curated by ACT

Nurse Myra Grimsley (Bennett) was a nurse in Britain throughout World War I. She came to Newfoundland in 1921 as a volunteer and worked there for over 50 years. She was the only source of medical aid to people living along a 320-kilometre stretch of Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula. She traveled to her patients by any means necessary, whether it was boat, horse or dogsled, and she often worked with no pay. Her story is retold here through photographs, documents and journal entries.
