Photos can challenge stereotypes. To gain an understanding of the big picture, groups examine a series of photographs and analyze how a photographer's choices can shape a viewer's reaction to an image. For the first set of photographs, groups look for specific details that reveal the photographer's point of view. They then examine a second set of pictures and use Venn diagrams to note how they are alike and different from the people pictured.

Instructional Ideas

  • To save the cost of making multiple copies of the color photographs, project the images instead
  • Have individuals select an image that at first glance is not like themselves, paste it in their journals, and then write about how they are alike and different from the person in the image
  • Encourage class members to select images they believe have a point of view and show activism

Classroom Considerations

  • Second resource in an 11-part series focusing on using photographs to teach social justice
  • Rules must be in place for safe, respectful discussions
  • Requires scissors and paper for every group

Pros

  • Includes discussion questions that prompt groups to examine their assumptions and inferences

Cons

  • None
