Unesco: Ancient City of Bosra

Curated by ACT

The ancient city of Bosra, a World Heritage site, is located in Syria. It was the capital of Arabia under the Romans, and sits along the route to Mecca taken by ancient travelers. It has monuments from the Nabataean, Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad periods. The photographs here were taken prior to the escalation of the Syrian conflict, and some destruction has occurred since then. In the 'Documents' section for Bosra, you can read recent State of Conservation reports that describe what is known so far about the damage. A video by UNESCO also provides background on Bosra's historical significance, and takes you on a virtual tour through the ancient section of Bosra. Of special interest is the belief that the Prophet Muhammad received his revelation there that he would be God's messenger.
