Translate Word Phrases and Sentences into Inequalities and Vice Versa

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Many times, learners get frustrated because they feel like they have the tools to solve an algebra problem, but not the ability to turn the English into math. This presentation focuses solely on that skill, starting with basic algebraic sentences and progressing through more complex word problems. No solving of the inequalities is actually done, but the strategies and word cues to convert between inequalities and sentences are thoroughly explained in each of the six examples. A great introductory lesson to inequality word problems or a refresher on terminology when a series of lessons has been more procedural based.

Instructional Ideas

  • Create a matching game with written statements and matching inequalities as partner cards
  • Consider linking the presentation on the class website for viewing prior to class in the flipped classroom model, or for homework help in a traditional setting

Classroom Considerations

  • Viewing the presentation requires Internet access
  • ELL pupils might need greater support through this lesson, given the density of the English throughout the presentation
  • Consider pausing at the start of each problem to allow the class time to work or ask questions about the concepts
  • More literal learners might need to have it made explicit that the assignment of an unknown variable doesn't necessarily have to be x

Pros

  • Easily understood narration of lesson
  • Problems progress gradually from simple translation to synthesis of real-world word problems
  • Multiple attack strategies and common pitfalls discussed where applicable, without confusing the linear flow of the lesson

Cons

  • No note slides made available for printing
  • Homework problems not made available
