Positive or negative, zero or no solution, are all possibilities for the solution of a linear equation. Here the resource gives examples of linear equations in one variable and their type of solutions. The resource comes with commentary that helps direct class discussion for each case. Teachers might want to include an equation of infinite solutions. Additional problems are needed for extra practice.

Pros

  • As the resource states, this exercise turns the focus away from problem solving to thinking about what a solution means.
  • This is the first step of interpreting the structure of an expression which is expanded upon in high school.

Cons
