The Sex Lives of Nonvascular Plants: Alternation of Generations

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Plants evolved more than 400 million years ago into two types — vascular and nonvascular. Here's a video that explains the difference between vascular and nonvascular plants and then focuses on the over 24,000 types of nonvascular plants, i.e., those without seeds, flowers, or vascular tissue. Liverworts, hornworts, and mosses, and their alternation of generation life cycles, are featured.

Instructional Ideas

  • Use the video after teaching nonvascular plants and their methods of reproduction to reinforce concepts taught
  • Have a cheat sheet for students to record information about the gametophyte and sporophyte generation, pausing the video while they write
  • For visual learners, have them draw the sporophyte generation and gametophyte generation for greater understanding

Classroom Considerations

  • At 3:45, the narrator says that Spanish moss is a lichen, which is incorrect, and across the bottom of the screen is the correction
  • Video 36 in a series of 40
  • This video is hosted on YouTube

Pros

  • Includes a table of contents for teachers to show only specific segments or to reshow parts the class needs to see again
  • Related videos are embedded

Cons

  • The narrator speaks quickly and covers a lot of information in less than 10 minutes, a pretty fast pace
