The Aztec pictorial manuscript later known as the Codex Telleriano-Remensis was created in sixteenth-century Mexico, about a generation after contact. It is considered one of the most beautiful and informative remaining works by the Aztecs. As with similar works, it is likely that early Colonial Spaniards commissioned native artists to copy and preserve original pictorial manuscripts which were then identified and annotated in Spanish. Additionally, this appears to be a combination of different prehispanic manuscripts into a single visual encyclopedia of Aztec life, especially as it contains three distinct sections: a calendar of monthly rituals, a religiously influenced calendar, and a historical chronicle.
