Instructional Ideas

  • Hand out the materials as you go through each chapter or make a packet of the student pages, leaving out the quizzes and first page of the packet
  • Make a class copy for all of your classes to use and have learners record their notes and responses in a journal; this way, they will have plenty of space to respond to all types of questions

Classroom Considerations

  • Quite a few of the questions just say to discuss; you may need to provide additional support for learners by setting up a small group discussion protocol or allowing students to take some time to write before discussing the text
  • Some of the materials mentioned in the list of prereading activities are not included and will need to be found elsewhere

Pros

  • Includes three short-answer quizzes and a mid-text exam (multiple choice and short answer)
  • Provides discussion questions and other tasks for every chapter in the novel
  • Covers quite a few important reading skills, such as comparing and contrasting, determining main ideas and details, making inferences, and making predictions

Cons

  • A recurring image in the resource doesn't work and there is a typo on the first page
  • While reading quizzes are included throughout the resource, there is no final assessment and very little closure provided
