Many adults find it difficult to imagine that some middle schoolers are sexually active, and thus they shy away from discussing sexual activity with young people. However, misinformation and lack of information about such topics as STDs can be dangerous, especially to this age group. Two activities provide learners with the information they need about various STDs and ways to protect themselves from these diseases.

Instructional Ideas

  • Invite a health professional to conduct the lesson
  • Divide the class into 11 groups, assign each a different article to read and discuss, and have them report their findings to the whole class

Classroom Considerations

  • Before using the resource, check the school and district regulations about discussing the topic in the classroom; many districts require parent permission slips
  • Prepare alternative assignments for families that opt-out
  • Presumes a protocol is in place to permit a safe, respectful discussion of the topic
  • Requires either printed copies of the articles or group access to computers with internet
