App Overview

The app begins with a tutorial video that briefly describes how the app works and introduces the main characters of the animated shorts. Made up of 30 scenes starring Ann, Mark, and Paul (or Ana, Marcos, and Pablo), the entire course follows a similar pattern. For each scene, you complete eight activities that focus on reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The first lesson is free, and you can purchase the entire course for $14.99, or buy single lessons for $1.99 each.

For Every Lesson:

  • View an animated short that demonstrates all the words and phrases for that lesson
  • Watch the video with subtitles
  • Watch the video with subtitles and translated subtitles
  • Practice pronunciation by saying and recording each phrase; compare your recording to audio from the video
  • Write down each spoken phrase and check your spelling and grammar
  • Respond to conversational questions and comments by selecting the correct word bubble; you must get five correct for the activity to count as completed
  • Practice translation by listening to excerpts and choosing the correct meaning from a list; you must get 20 correct to finish
  • Pick up more vocabulary by tapping on the highlighted words in the final activity

Settings:

  • Play the tutorial video again
  • Change the native language
  • Set a lesson reminder
  • Toggle word of the day on and off
  • Reset your progress

Other Features:

  • Go back to any part of a lesson to repeat an activity; there is no need to reset progress unless a new person is using the app
  • Make notes that save with a time and date stamp; e-mail your notes
  • View an overlay of basic instructions by tapping the question mark

Instructional Ideas

Ask your pupils to use the app for individual practice in class or at home. You can keep an eye on student progress with the percentage and bar that accompanies each lesson.

Each scene could act as a demonstration and inspiration for group presentations. Show the scenes first and then send small groups off to repeat the conversations, add to them if desired, and present their work after some practice.

Classroom Considerations

All of the conversations are appropriate for the classroom; however, some of the backgrounds and props for the scenes have adult themes. View the lessons beforehand to make sure they are right for your group of learners.

While the animated characters have choppy movements and are not super realistic, there is a storyline that will engage the interest of language learners.

Pros

  • Learners are exposed to conversations spoken by native speakers
  • The activities require pupils to practice vocabulary and phrases in a variety of different ways
  • Class members will enjoy the short, animated videos

Cons

  • Beginners might initially have some trouble with completing the activities, since there are no spelling, grammar, or pronunciation lessons
  • While purchasing the whole course is a decent value, the individual lessons are somewhat expensive, especially since there are other apps that offer similar content for less
