Starting with similar triangles and dilation factors, this unit quickly and thoroughly progresses into the world of right triangle features and trigonometric relationships. Presented in easy-to-attack modules with copious application examples, concepts are fleshed out by the learners themselves as they tackle problems and make conclusions. Familiar concepts including the Pythagorean theorem and parallel line properties are spiraled into developing an understanding of new material, grounding concepts (like trigonometric ratios) that can often be esoteric and fodder for rote memorization.

Instructional Ideas

  • Study of trigonometric relationships and similar triangles could be extended to real-life measurement projects (such as determining height of structures)

Classroom Considerations

  • Parts of some activities are reviews of unrelated concepts (ie. function review in 6.1)
  • Rubber band stretcher activity requires procuring and setup of materials ahead of time

Pros

  • Exceptionally thorough and detailed activities, teacher notes and worksheets
  • Students are led to consider underlying concepts, not just memorize patterns
  • Traditionally complicated concepts of trigonometric theory broken into manageable and intuitive discovery lessons

Cons

  • No teacher keys for student worksheets
  • No final summative assessment provided
