Serc: Mn Step: The First Law of Motion: The Tower of Coins

Curated by ACT

Students learn about inertia in this simple experiment. They create a stack of twelve round objects, beginning with nickels, and try to remove the bottom object without toppling the tower. Various tools are provided for them to use for this. After experimenting with nickels, they repeat it with other round objects, e.g., pennies or washers, and as they progress, they can use other tools they find in the classroom.
