Programming a robot is a mathematical task! The activity asks learners to examine the process of programming a robot to vacuum a room. They use a coordinate plane to model the room, write equations to represent movement, determine the robot's speed in a given direction, and calculate the distance the robot has moved diagonally. They also make time and location predictions.

  • Use the extension idea included for pupils that finish early
  • Allow individuals to use graph paper to draw the sample space and use for a reference

Classroom Considerations

  • Assumes proficiency with writing linear equations and interpreting rate of change
  • The intent is for the lesson to take one class period, but most likely would take two or more class periods; time limitations may restrict using the lesson in its entirety
  • The first in a series of 15 lessons

Pros

  • Includes every aspect of a quality lesson including an opening and closing activity
