As your scholars begin learning letters of the alphabet, help them connect sound, pronunciation, word examples, and letter recognition using these strategies. Focusing on the letter i, begin by drawing it on the board. Can scholars identify it? Model the sound, explaining to the class how you are creating it and asking them to try. What words begin with this sound? Finally, play a game with pre-readers encouraging letter recognition. You point to one letter at a time, and if it's an i they say the /i/ sound, staying silent for every other letter.
