To gain a deeper understanding of the plight of refugees and asylum seekers, class members read stories written from the point of view of an emigrant, map the individual's journey, and note the human rights affected by each stage of the journey. They then consider whether or not the United States does a good job of protecting the human rights of asylum seekers and refugees.

Instructional Ideas

  • Rather than simply listing similarities and differences, use a Venn diagram to record these comparisons between refugees and asylum seekers
  • Determine if any class members are refugees or asylum seekers and be prepared to offer them one of the suggested alternative assignments

Classroom Considerations

  • The resource comes with a warning that instructors should read the advisory on  page 20 of the packet before beginning the lesson
  • Requires copies of multiple handouts including ones used in earlier lessons in the series (The Universal Declaration of Human Rights)
  • Data on refugees and asylum seekers is outdated (2010) and would need to be updated
  • The resource does not take into account post 9/11 changes in immigration policy
  • The sixth in a series of 13 lessons designed to be used in order

Pros

  • Within the 24-page packet you'll find a detailed plan, the stories, worksheets, a role-playing activity, and templates for the activity cards
  • Offers alternative assignments for class members who are refugees or assylum seekers

Cons

  • Link to the PowerPoint presentation is broken
