Explore with your class the purposes and author's intents for poetry titles. First you read several brief poems to the class and discuss how the authors may have chosen the titles. Then small groups read title-less poems posted around the room and develop titles to accompany them. Guide a discussion about the how and why of putting titles to poetry. To assess, provide readers with a list of poems and titles that they read and match to one another. Discuss responses.
