In this parent and child activity, young learners read Martin’s Big Words and a biography of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There is a wonderful guided reading pdf that defines challenge words and provides reading tips. The object of this activity is for the child to come up with 3 symbols that associate with Martin Luther King and the civils rights movement and then create a picture of each. This is a great homework activity or extension for your advanced learners. Invite students to present their symbols to the class and then add them to a Black History themed bulletin board.
