Instructional Ideas

  • Use in a language arts class or math class to encourage number writing
  • Assign as homework or a warm-up activity in the beginning of a lesson
  • Have kids work in pairs to solve the problems at the end
  • Include in a reading or writing assessment

Classroom Considerations

  • Learners may be thrown off by the hyphens between the numbers in the subtraction equations; be sure to emphasize which signs are meant for subtraction
  • Designed for English learners but helpful for kids in mainstream classes as well
  • You may need to provide space for kids to write out the equations in numerical form to solve them, if they're not using mental math

Pros

  • Comes with an answer key for straightforward assessment
  • Provides a few examples

Cons

  • None
