Mpr: The Meaning of Sioux Music and Song

Curated by ACT

This site from the Minnesota Public Radio provides the text of a 1915 article written by musician and self-trained anthropologist, Frances Densmore. Densmore spent years studying the music and culture of the Teton Sioux and other native peoples. This article describes the meaning and stories behind Indian dream songs, medicine songs, game songs, warrior songs, praise songs, and love songs. Discusses technical aspects of how Densmore transcribed the music as well as analysis of the music itself.
