This fabulous resource is a must-have for any algebra teacher's arsenal of lessons. Developing the idea of equations and use of variables from basic physical scenarios, learners gain valuable intuition in the structure and meaning of expressions. With guidance and support, pupils build equations from patterns, and interpret features like slope and intercepts. The activities here effectively build the bridge between concrete and abstract thought required to be successful in algebra and beyond.

Instructional Ideas

  • Use as a whole unit, or broken apart as homework assignments to supplement classroom lecture or activities
  • Have learners develop equations for parallel real-life situations (actual school cafeteria costs, for example)

Classroom Considerations

  • Each day's activities build on the previous lessons, which might require remediation for absences
  • Review materials may not be review since not all curriculum is ordered the same way

Pros

  • Engaging descriptions and problem set-ups without being too wordy
  • Thorough and step-by-step approach builds understanding in a logical way
  • Development of equations from physical scenarios supports abstract thought and use of algebra

Cons

  • Khan Academy and PatrickJMT resource links on the bottom of page 6, 19, 24, 31, 40, 47 are broken links because of typos in the hyperlink. The same links in other activities are functional
  • No answer keys or summative assessment provided
