Video game characters move straight with matrices. The first day of a two-day lesson introduces the class to linear transformations that produce straight line motion. The 23rd part in a 32-part series has pupils determine the transformations that take place as a character in a video game moves along a straight line. They also find that not all linear motions can be represented as a matrix transformation.

Instructional Ideas

  • Have groups decide on a character movement and write the matrix transformation that will accomplish that movement

Classroom Considerations

  • Class members should be familiar with matrix multiplication
  • The exercises require the pupils to understand when it is required to set up and solve linear equations

Pros

  • The answer key provides alternative solutions
  • The teacher notes include anticipated responses to discussion questions

Cons

  • None
