As the instructor reads aloud several quotes from five chapters of the story Matilda, class members mime their interpretation of the scenes. Then, after reading "Miss Honey" and "The Trenchbull" (chapters seven and eight), the class previews several pictures—from a porcelain figure to a rhinoceros—and discusses how each picture effectively describes both characters. Lastly, readers brainstorm a list of words that are synonyms for eating and another list for dangerous animals to demonstrate Dahl's use of figurative language and mixing of words throughout the story.

Instructional Ideas

  • Use the quotes listed on page two of the resource to bookmark and highlight them in book in order to refernce them easily

Classroom Considerations

  • Requires a class set of the book Matilda by Roald Dahl—specifically chapters 7, 8, 12, 14, and 20
  • Gather the list of necessary pictures for the main teaching activity ahead of time
  • Ensure learners know that miming requires no talking or touching of anything; consider modeling how to mime

Pros

  • Miming of the quotes helps individuals create an interpretation of the figurative language
  • Fun for class members to mime the actions of the quotes
  • Offers group and independent work, as well as extension activities

Cons
