Magnet Academy: Karl Jansky

Curated by ACT

Karl Jansky discovered extraterrestrial radio waves while investigating possible sources of interference in shortwave radio communications across the Atlantic for Bell Laboratories, and is often known as the father of radio astronomy. Following his discovery, Jansky continued to contribute to improved radio communications, but never had the opportunity to further investigate the radio waves that he had been the first to detect. The jansky was adopted as a unit of measurement for radio wave intensity as a tribute to him.
