Hop into a covered wagon and follow Laura Ingalls Wilder through the Midwest. A series of lessons based on Little House on the Prairie encourages young pioneers to see the world through Laura's eyes as they map her journey, discuss the Native American tribes in the area, prepare the necessary equipment for traveling, and learn about the ways prairie life was different than their lives today.

Instructional Ideas

  • Peruse the auxiliary materials and integrate them into your current pioneer unit
  • Divide your class into literature circles when reading the novel

Classroom Considerations

  • Contains some spelling and grammar mistakes
  • The introduction mentions the Ten Commandments, but there is no mention of the Bible or the Commandments at any other part in the lesson
  • Subject matter is engaging but learning objectives do not extend beyond knowledge-level information

Pros

  • Good supplemental activities for your novel unit
  • Applicable for social studies or language arts
  • Includes prompts for project-based learning and collaborative group work

Cons

  • While the materials in the packet are interesting, they do not seem to come together in a cohesive unit or build upon the previous lessons
  • Many of the video links are private or unavailable; you'll need to find replacement videos if you want to cover the topics listed
