Students read through poems in a book called Pass it On. There are 19 poems from famous African American poets contained in the book. The poems are specialized for children and after the children have learned about the author and about the poem, they can write one of their own. Students poems can be on a variety of topics such as happy, sad, silly or serious. They can even write a poem related to a favorite activity they like to do.
