To gain a more in-depth understanding of the tumultuous 1960s, young historians examine video clips, listen to music, examine images, and interview survivors. Once they have a foundation of information about the period, class members present their thoughts about this divisive period through a presentation, piece of art, writings, or a visual or aural program.

Instructional Ideas

  • Have class members write a short summary of what they already know about the 1960s, including politics, music, movies, and society of the time period
  • Connect the lesson between language arts and social studies during a unit on the 21st century

Classroom Considerations

  • Based on the series The Sixties: The Years That Shaped a Generation, which is available for purchase and streaming online
  • The 17-page packet includes two detailed unit plans
  • A protocol must be in place for a safe, respectful discussion of the controversies associated with the time period
  • Due to the graphic nature of some of the images, preview all the materials to determine if appropriate for your learning situation

Pros

  • Integrates history, language arts, art, and technology
  • Includes detailed lesson plans and an extensive list of suggested resources

Cons

  • None
