Looking for a fresh approach to an end-of-unit project for The Odyssey? Check out a resource that has class members write their own hero's journey short story and then craft an illustration that depicts their tale. Apollonio di Giovanni’s 15th-century Renaissance representation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem The Adventures of Ulysses and Romare Bearden’s The Return of Odysseus (Homage to Pintoricchio and Benin) are used as models.

Instructional Ideas

  • Coordinate the project with the art teacher or invite an art docent to speak with the class about various narrative structures artist can employ (monoscenic, synoptic, cyclic, continuous, etc)

Classroom Considerations

  • Consider expanding the lesson length to several weeks so that class members have time to draft and revise their short stories, and to create their illustrations

Pros

  • The seven-page packet includes the plan, directions for the project, discussion questions, and a glossary
  • Perfect for AP Art and Humanities classes

Cons

  • While images of both paintings are readily available on the Internet, no links are provided to the works
  • No rubric is included for the project
