Students examine how a sanitary landfill is constructed, how it functions, and how waste and leachate affects the areas around the landfill. After a discussion about landfills and leachates, students construct a Sanitary Landfill Model and collect data on the runoff from simulated rainfall. Students also conduct three other experiments using leachate from their landfills-How leachate contaminates groundwater, How leachate affects plants, and How leachate affects living things.
