What's it like to be a deep-sea explorer? Tap into the imaginations of your fifth and sixth graders with a vivid lesson, the second part of a six-part adventure. Learners close their eyes and submerge themselves in an expedition aboard the Okeanos Explorer, where they "see" the unusual landscapes and organisms of the deep sea. Following the story, they use their senses of touch and sight to make inferences about the location of the tale.

Instructional Ideas

  • Plan additional time for the quadrat simulated exploration activity to illustrate the process scientists use to make certain no stone is left unexamined

Classroom Considerations

  • Print and laminate color copies of photo resources to reuse

Pros

  • The engaging story, as told by the teacher, makes pupils feel more a part of the exploration
  • Teacher's guide includes a variety of extensions to carry the journey further and includes all printables
