Using the book My Red Balloon by Eve Bunting, Kindergartners will gain an understanding that stories often have solutions. Using Eve Bunting's book as an example the teacher will identify the solution to the story and walk the students through how she recalled the solution by referring back to the text. Using previously read stories the class will discuss problems or conflicts in the stories and how they are resolved. For independent practice they will write a sentence and draw a corresponding picture to show the solution to a previously read book. This instructional activity can be used and modified to go along with fiction works that you have your own class library.
