In this lesson, 5th graders learn about the many societal structures that developed in colonial days, including the conditions for self-government in America, the free-market economy, and the slavery system. Background information for teachers is included. Students create a large map of the North Atlantic and simulate a trading activity between England and its colonies. They next learn about the slave trade and the experiences of both a slave and a slave trader. Student resources are included.
