Instructional Ideas

  • Since this unit is a week-long exploration of text excerpts, you could add it into a larger unit WWII
  • Language arts and social studies teachers could collaborate in order to expand the unit and cover more of each text and more historical information

Classroom Considerations

  • The unit uses excerpts from the two texts, but offers suggestions for how to conduct the procedures if you are planning to read one or both of the full texts
  • See the appendix for materials to support the essay assignment, such as a graphic organizer and assignment page; you may still wish to provide your own supporting materials if these are not sufficient
  • Students will need to have prior knowledge of Pearl Harbor, US involvement in WWII, and Japanese-American internment camps

Pros

  • Vocabulary is included alongside text excerpts
  • Text-dependent questions are provided for each reading selection with answers written in the document for teacher reference
  • Appendices include homework assignment and extension activity options as well as other supporting materials

Cons

  • None
