A reading of Pat Street's There's a Frog in My Throat launches a study of figurative language. Using a pocket chart, display one phrase containing figurative language. Class members choose the best explanation from three choices offered. For guided practice, young readers record examples of figurative language in Fred Gwynne’s The Kind Who Rained on a graphic organizer and explain the meanings of the phrases. These worksheets are used again for independent practice with Chip Lovitt’s The Flamingos Are Tickled Pink.
