In an electrolytic cell, electrical energy is converted into chemical energy, the exact opposite of a battery! Lesson 15 in a series of 36 explores electrochemistry. Participants begin by reading and discussing oxidation/reduction equations and move into conductivity, exploring electrolytic and molar conduction. They also discuss electrolytic and Galvanic cells and end by using the Nernst equation.

Instructional Ideas

  • Set up some of the reactions shown through the lesson so classes can see and better understand the concepts

Classroom Considerations

  • Lesson best fits higher level high schoolers
  • Duration of activity depends upon the level of the learners and length of class periods; lesson could take three to five days or more

Pros

  • Activity includes in-text questions at the end of every section and a key
  • Provides 20-question assessment, called the terminal exercise, to see if classes master the concepts; note that there is no key for these questions

Cons

  • None
