Tired of waiting for hot water? Groups of three determine the efficiency of an electric water-heating device. They calculate the amount of energy it takes to heat the water and the theoretical amount of energy required to heat the water. The class then compares the efficiency of each device and determines which method is the most efficient.

Concepts

energy, entropy, thermodynamics, measurement, technology resources

Instructional Ideas

  • Use different electrical methods to heat the water to have a variety of efficiencies
  • With a variety of heating methods, predict which would be more energy efficient

Classroom Considerations

  • Be sure that your class practices safety in handling hot containers
  • It is best to have a water meter for each group

Pros

  • The hands-on activity is based upon Energy Efficiency lesson
  • Brings a theoretical concept to reality for the class through the calculations,

Cons

  • None
