Educational Technology Clearinghouse: Maps Etc: Climatic Regions of Mexico, 1899

Curated by ACT

A map from 1899 of Mexico showing the general climate divisions of the region, including areas of warm climate, temperate climate, and cold climate. "The Tropic of Cancer crosses Mexico near the center. The low, hot, and moist coast lands, called the hot lands, have tropical products - cotton, indigo, sugarcane, bananas, and other fruits. In summer the decay of the rank vegetation gives rise to malaria and sometimes yellow fever, the scourge of this part of the country. On the mountain slopes at an elevation of from 3000 to 6000 feet is the temperate region, where a genial climate, magnificent scenery, and semi-tropical vegetation unite to form the 'Paradise of Mexico.’ Here the cereals are cultivated. The higher altitudes receive the name of cold lands, but except on the snow-clad summits of the mountain peaks the climate is mild." - Tarbell, 1899, pp. 168-169.
