Britain's decision not to bomb German death camps in World War II has provided many questions for historians, but with a primary source analysis lesson, high school students may be a step closer to finding out the truth. Learners read letters, telegrams, and internal documents that determine how much the British government knew and when they knew it. They then synthesize their knowledge into a PowerPoint presentation.

Instructional Ideas

  • Pose the inquiry question as a discussion or writing prompt at the beginning of class; see if learners can come up with multiple reasons why Britain would not have wanted to bomb the camps
  • Have both electronic and printed versions of the documents available for small groups or individuals

Classroom Considerations

  • Requires access to the Internet and the latest version of Flash®
  • The second of four lessons in a series on World War II in Eastern Europe

Pros

  • Provides a presentation template for easy skill transfer
  • Lesson structure staggers the input of information as to not overwhelm learners

Cons

  • None
