Dr. Seuss and Read Across America

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

What important facts about Dr. Seuss influenced the Read Across America movement...? This is the driving question of a research project that requires scholars to find information about Dr. Seuss' life and work. Class members write a biographical paragraph using the research they gathered, before writing an autobiographical paragraph about themselves that illustrates their favorite Dr. Seuss books. All of which, are showcased on a folded book jacket.

Instructional Ideas

  • Instead of providing all the informational material, use the research project as a learning opportunity for scholars to search independently, or with a partner, for applicable and appropriate information related to the topic
  • Print, copy, handout, and discuss the rubric with learners to guide their work throughout the creating process
  • Since there are multiple steps to complete the project, create a progress page that class members can use to monitor their efficiency

Classroom Considerations

  • Lesson states that a second teacher is required; however, one teacher can implement it
  • Lesson assumes individuals have experience working with biographies and autobiographies

Pros

  • Options to work with another teacher or librarian is presented
  • One follow up activity is listed
  • Provides a rubric for the book jacket

Cons

  • Some typos and grammar mistakes are visible
