Detroit News: The Hockey Game That Broke Out During a Riot

Curated by ACT

The Detroit News, Detroit's daily newspaper, has a retrospective look at the Rocket Richard riot. On March 17, 1955, the newspaper reports, hockey fans in the Montreal Forum went on a seven-hour rampage of destruction and looting. The Detroit Red Wings were playing the Canadiens for the Stanley Cup when the suspension of Rocket Richard sparked civil unrest. There are several photos from the time and this article is a valuable independent source on how the violence was seen outside of Canada.
