Instructional Ideas

  • Take writers outside, have them lay down and look up at the sky, and tell them to write down their descriptions in an Interactive Writing Journal
  • If going outside is not an option, have multiple pictures of the sky—printed or projected—readily available for learners to examine
  • After participants write their descriptions, add a visual component; have them draw what they saw and attach it to their writing

Classroom Considerations

  • Class members should be familiar with writing using similes and metaphors

Pros

  • Provides a link to assist in the use of similes and metaphors
  • The exercise can be used with any picture
  • Boosts observation skills
