Instructional Ideas

  • Create a cross-curricular project between social studies and language arts for learners to write about current events
  • Set your newspaper during a particular time period that corresponds with your class novel unit, and have young writers report on events that come up in the book
  • Publish the newspapers to display for an Open House or Parents' Night

Classroom Considerations

  • Some of the formatting on the worksheets is a little small and hard to read
  • Lesson is divided into seven sessions, but you could organize it differently based on the length of your class periods and needs of your curriculum

Pros

  • Versatile for any subject or topic you're covering
  • Focuses on nonfiction text features
  • Great for both language arts and journalism classes
  • Provides all necessary worksheet and auxiliary materials

Cons

  • The link in the fourth session is not working
