Ramp up a design challenge. Class members design ramps to meet a client's requirements to comply with the American with Disabilities Act. The scholars create a scaled graph of their designs and determine the equations of the lines on their graphs. Learners share their designs with the class via a gallery walk and check to be sure others' designs also meet the restrictions.

Instructional Ideas

  • Ask pupils to intentionally create a ramp that is below ADA requirements, not just equal to the requirements
  • Lead a short discussion on how to write a linear piecewise function with restricted domains

Classroom Considerations

  • Requires individuals to know how to determine the equation of a line

Pros

  • Includes suggestions for extension problems
  • Provides information about requirements for ramps in the American with Disabilities Act

Cons

  • None
