Kleenex folded in a box is similar to mitochondria in a cell. Llearners explore how eukaryotic cells have specialized organelles that increase the surface area of the cell without making it smaller. E.coli, Halobacteria, and Mitochondria are compared in terms of their size, jobs, and surface area. The video also discusses Endoplasmic Reticulum's job and surface area.

Instructional Ideas

  • Review organelles of eukaryotic cells and their functions before showing this video
  • Ask learners what compartmentalization means to them and write answers on the board; show video and then tweak definition on board

Classroom Considerations

  • Resource requires a computer, Internet access, and projection system
  • Part 13 in a series of 37

Pros

  • Great analogy between Kleenex box and compartmentalization of a cell
  • Video does not explore compartmentalization of all organelles, just the mitochondrion and endoplasmic reticulum, so it is not trying to pack in too much information
  • Includes a concept map and slideshow

Cons

  • None
