A world without adjectives would be a sad place indeed! Make sure adjectives stay around by teaching your class about what they are and how using them can make a boring story truly interesting. Learners put this idea into practice by editing a paragraph to include adjectives.

Instructional Ideas

  • Invite pupils to work with partners as they add in appropriate (and maybe sometimes outlandish) adjectives to the story
  • Have kids read their versions out loud to the class to compare

Classroom Considerations

  • While this activity does include an answer key, it is actually not useful, since the idea is that learners are to come up with their own original adjectives
  • The lines that students are meant to write on are rather narrow, so you may wish to provide a separate sheet of writing paper

Pros

  • The activity requires pupils to think creatively and allows for some fun
  • Requires class members to identify and use several different parts of speech

Cons

  • None
