The sun is shining and the birds are singing, what better time to teach young learners about the fun season of summer. In this week-long science series, children learn how the rotation and orbit of the earth influence the days and seasons, and how plants and animals adapt to the changing conditions in the summer months.

Instructional Ideas

  • Teach this lesson series at the beginning or end of the school year as a way to either celebrate summer's arrival or reflect back on summer vacation
  • Have students keep the materials from this unit in a four seasons folder, allowing them to track their observations and learning about the changing seasons throughout the year

Classroom Considerations

  • Depending on the age level of your students, you will need to adjust the depth to which you cover the details regarding the earth's motion
  • A couple different children's stories are read during these lessons, which may be found in your school or local public library
  • Photosensitive paper, UV beads, and other materials not typically found in the classroom are needed for these lessons, so be sure to plan ahead

Pros

  • All supplemental worksheets, graphics organizers and other printable materials are included with the unit
  • A script for a play about summer is included with the lesson series
  • Includes a recipe for making ice cream in the classroom

Cons

  • None
