Booker T. Washington was often criticized by W.E.B. Dubois and other African American leaders for his conciliatory approach to civil rights and education voiced in his autobiography Up From Slavery.  This teacher's guide not only contains discussion questions, important quotations, and activities for all 17 chapters of the autobiography but also looks at Washington's more strident, behind-the-scenes efforts to promote social change.
